man|y|fold

man|y|fold
man|y|fold «MEHN ee FOHLD», adverb.
many times; to a great extent: »

During the past five years the number of weapons has increased manyfold (Lewis L. Strauss).

Usage Manyfold is a compound recently formed on the analogy of such compounds as twofold and threefold, which denote the number of times an action recurs: »

The population of our city has increased manyfold.

Manifold appeared in Old English about the same time as twofold and threefold but, unlike them, it does not function as an adverb and is limited to expressing kind and variety, never time and duration: »

His responsibilities are manifold.
